KOUTSOGIANNOPOULOS WINERY. The first stop of the tour is at the Koutsogiannopoulos Winery. It is the only Cave Wine Museum in Greece and is located 8 metres below surface. It’s labyrinth shaped and is 300m long. The museum showcases the history of wine and the life of Santorini winegrowers from 1660. The visitor takes a tour of the area replete with exhibits and reconstructions from the history of wine. An Automatic Audio Tour is available in 14 languages. At the end of the tour the visitor has the opportunity to taste four of the best wines currently produced by the winery at the specially designed wine tasting area. Concluding, the visitor savours the knowledge earned from this journey in the past.
ARGYROU WINERY. The Argyros estate was founded in 1903 and is run by Matthew Argyros, a 4th generation winemaker. Based at Episkopi, Santorini, the winery owns 120ha of vines with an average age of 70 years, including some of the older vines on the island that are over 200 years old. With a history dating back two centuries, the Argyros Estate has evolved over time. The winery is housed in a new building, located at the heart of the vineyards.
VENETSANOS WINERY. The tour ends at the Venetsianos winery. The Venetsanos winery is located just above the port of Athinios, overlooking the enchanting caldera of Santorini. It was built in 1947 by the Venetsanos family and became the first industrial winery of the island. Its most outstanding feature is its structural design, essentially having used gravity early on to facilitate energy efficiency, at a time when access to electricity and other energy sources was very limited. The winery was built in a quite unconventional way, namely top to bottom. Nowadays at the winery you get the opportunity to walk in and discover its history and tradition along with new wine production techniques. You can take a detailed tour of the winery premises led by its specialised staff and taste some of its fine wines.
